Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to US legislators and impeding a congressional proceeding.
His lawyer entered the response representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.
His attorney announced he would seek to have the proceedings terminated for several causes including that his defendant, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being targeted.
James Comey was indicted soon after Trump urged his attorney general to move forward against him.
During the hearing on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they planned to file several legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to assume control of the proceedings.
The former director's legal matter was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.
The former director seemed in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was joined by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration terminated.
After listening to the court read his legal protections and the dual charges against him in court on Wednesday, James Comey was asked if he comprehended the accusations.
"Yes your honour. Thank you," he told the proceedings.
Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's first term as president. At the moment, the director was leading an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
While in office, Mr Comey caused a counter-response from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not filed, resulting in negative feedback from the Republican party as well.
The federal government assert the former director provided false information to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the upper house by stating he had not permitted an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to media organizations data about the agency probes.
Prosecutors also accuse the defendant of "wrongfully trying to sway, hinder and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.
Via social media the former director published to his online platform after he was accused, he stated he was innocent and accused Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".
"Our household have understood for a long time that there are consequences to standing up to the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "So let's have a trial."
The accusations against the former director came after Donald Trump shared on social media insisting on his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
