The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

Throughout this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting baby teeth of slumbering children and leaving treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the hideous creature he had imagined.

A Forbidden Connection and Common Enemy

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people together. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are said to be entitled types, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, such a setup needs a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

You won’t find all that many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is starting to experience early romances, but are not mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
